Check image quality for a print size

The calculator divides image pixels by the physical print dimensions and uses the limiting edge as effective DPI. It evaluates both portrait and landscape orientation, then reports the stronger fit.

Standard prints use different aspect ratios

A sharp image can still require cropping. A 4 × 6 print uses a 2:3 ratio, while 8 × 10 and 16 × 20 use 4:5. If the photo has another ratio, part of the image must be removed or blank borders must fill the difference.

Viewing distance changes the requirement

Small photos invite close inspection and benefit from high effective DPI. Posters and wall art are normally viewed farther away, so a lower DPI can still appear clean. The calculator labels 150 to 199 DPI “acceptable” rather than automatically rejecting it.

What is the best resolution for photo printing?

300 DPI is a widely used target for detailed photo prints. Many real-world prints remain strong at 240 DPI, depending on subject detail and output process.

Should I crop before sending a photo to print?

Preview the printer's crop for the chosen paper ratio. Keep faces, text, and important details away from edges that may be trimmed.

Does a larger file always make a better print?

No. Pixel dimensions and source quality matter more than compressed file size. A large, heavily processed file can contain less useful detail than a smaller clean original.
