How Large Can I Print My Photo?
Divide pixel dimensions by the target DPI, then account for crop, source sharpness, and viewing distance.

Calculate maximum print size
Divide width in pixels by the target DPI to get print width in inches. Do the same for height. A 6000 × 4000 pixel photo at 300 DPI produces a 20 × 13.33 inch image before cropping.

Allow for cropping
The camera ratio may not match the paper. A 3:2 photo fits 4 × 6 and 24 × 36 without proportional cropping, but an 8 × 10 print uses 4:5 and removes content from the longer edge.
Pixel count cannot fix every source problem
Motion blur, missed focus, excessive noise reduction, and strong JPEG artifacts can limit a print even when the calculated DPI is high. Inspect the original at 100% and make a small proof when the final output matters.
Frequently asked questions
Can I upscale a small photo?
Upscaling may reduce obvious pixelation, but it estimates new pixels and cannot reconstruct all original detail. Treat the result as a visual judgment rather than guaranteed recovery.
Should I use width or height to calculate?
Calculate both. The dimension that produces the lower DPI is the limiting edge for the chosen print size.
Do canvas prints need 300 DPI?
Not always. Canvas texture and normal viewing distance can make lower effective resolution acceptable. Follow the print provider's recommended minimum.
